An electricity load forecasting system for the Estonian transmission grid

Elering AS commissioned ProCom

The Estonian transmission grid operator, Elering AS, has commissioned ProCom GmbH, Aachen, to realise an electricity load forecasting system for the support of the grid control. With the help of ProCom-forecasts, which are based on artificial neuronal networks, a very precise forecasting of electricity loads on a national and local or zonal level of aggregation will be enabled. Elering thus wants to raise the system integrity as well as the security of supply and obtain an improved access to the available transmission capacities.

A task, which due to the increasing complexity of the Estonian energy market, is becoming more and more challenging. The progressive liberalisation of the Baltic energy markets, the connection to the Nordic power exchange and the high growth of power from renewable energy sources, in particular from wind power are reasons for the increased requirements of the network planning in Estonia. To further ensure the functioning of the electric systems with high reliability precise forecasts are indispensible. Hence, the ProCom developed hourly, daily and weekly operational forecast is supposed to improve the operational planning.

The experts from Estonia were able to convince themselves in advance by the forecasting quality, as the selection process included a back-forecast for November 2010, which was calculated with historical data from two years. Here, ProCom could score with high accuracy. In addition, the clear presentation of the results and the experienced project planning and execution persuaded.
