The Austrian firm BAUR Prüf- und Messtechnik GmbH will present its latest developments for cable diagnostics at the autumn trade fairs Energetab in Poland and MATELEC in Spain. BAUR has made it a goal to facilitate diagnostics as a standard measurement procedure along with cable testing, because loss factor measurement (also known as tan-delta measurement) and partial discharge measurement of both old and new cables reveal a lot about the condition, need for maintenance, quality of the connections (joints), possible fault locations and much more.

Integration of tan-delta and partial discharge measurement in the daily routine requires compact units that are simple to use, preferably dual function units. Many users who have a due appreciation of the value of diagnostic procedures are reluctant to take on the extra effort of connecting a second unit after the one for cable testing to carry out the diagnostics. That often takes too much time in day-to-day business.

BAUR has confronted this problem with a new generation of equipment which is handy, easily transportable and makes it possible to perform cable testing and/or cable diagnostics by the tan-delta method with a single unit for cable networks with a rated voltage up to 35 kV. Now, certainty about the condition of cables costs just a few extra minutes and requires no large investments. By using equipment capable of performing diagnostics, electrical technicians on the network can gather information in the ordinary course of work, which can be used as a basis for asset management decisions.
