"Smart Energy" is the main theme at the E-world 2010 trade fair in February in Essen. The implementation of the corresponding busi-ness processes and the IT tools necessary to do so are the focus of the member companies of the EDNA Initiative represented atE-world. Altogether, once again, there are 40 companies who are EDNA members at the upcoming E-world in Essen – this is approxi-mately 10% of all fair participants. They will be exhibiting all the im-portant processes related to the IT-technical implementation of smart energy, ranging from the digital meter on to energy management and including billing. This means that this year the EDNA members are providing a comprehensive overview of one of the topics being dis-cussed most frequently on the energy market. The EDNA fair guide, available online as of mid-December at the following web address www.edna-initiative.de serves as a compass for anyone wishing to get informed in depth regarding smart energy processes.
"One of the topics that we will be discussing particularly thoroughly at the E-world is the determination of minimum standards for market communica-tion in the metrology sector", stated Rüdiger Winkler, Managing Director of the EDNA Initiative. Another issue is how versions are replaced, something which needs to be regulated beforehand such that users as well as IT pro-viders have a realistic chance of implementing changes or innovations in the processes in due time. "What we experienced in the past few years is not something that should be repeated regarding implementation of metrol-ogy liberalisation", noted Winkler. "Whether you are talking about unbun-dling, GPKE or GeLi Gas: in many cases, the introduction of new proc-esses on the energy market was anything but smooth. There was too little consideration made for the fact that the corresponding IT solutions did not simply have to be developed, but especially needed intensive testing also and finally, they had to be organisationally implemented in the companies". This is why the EDNA Initiative continues to demand that uniform testing procedures for all market participants are introduced. This would mean significant savings in time and expense and thus provide palpable relief to companies in the energy business. There are positive examples of this in the Netherlands and Switzerland where the testing procedures proposed by the EDNA Initiative for launching or for the version replacement process have already been successfully implemented.

The EDNA Initiative e.V. is a coalition of software manufacturers, corporate consultants and IT service providers & users from the different sectors of eBusiness active on the energy mar-kets and dealing with energy logistics. The aim of EDNA is to promote the automation of business processes between market partners in the energy industry and implement existing and new electronic data exchange standards in software systems, making them "purchasable" in doing so. At the same time a certification procedure and an EDNA seal of approval should ensure that IT systems do indeed abide by the set standards. For the user this means a much larger amount of security in the investment and decision than previously as time-consuming interface programming and integration efforts are no longer required. At the same time the user can tap into considerable rationalisation potential through the automation of business processes.
