In the framework of the project Future Energy Solution (FES), Hamburg Energie wants to explore ways to efficiently market power storage facilities with high system inertia in the reserve capacity and short-term markets. In the project – a joint endeavor of Hamburg Energy, Siemens Gamesa and the Hamburg-Harburg University of Applied Sciences, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) – an electric hot-air blower converts electricity into heat for storage in a bulk material storage facility. On demand, this heat drives a steam turbine to generate electricity. The aim of BoFiT Optimization is to ensure the maximum financial benefit from this thermal storage facility. Energy and material flows can easily be modeled and optimized using this solution from ProCom. Based on operating conditions and technical constraints as well as current market data and forecasts, BoFiT Optimization computes proposals for storage facility deployment and long-term or short-term electricity trading.
"Hamburg Energie wants to optimize this facility, which cannot be controlled on the basis of fixed deployment schemes", says Serge Runge, Head of Special Projects at Hamburg Energie. "FES is a project in which the constraints and the characteristic curves for startup and shutdown play a major role. Short-term marketing of such systems would be inconceivable without BoFiT," he says. For example, with the electrothermal storage facility it is necessary to consider how the storage level evolves with the provision of reserve capacity and how much power is available for how long. "BoFiT deployment planning enables us to make optimal use of the facility for short-term electricity trading or provision of reserve capacity, depending on the operating situation," says Runge with conviction.
