When the largest battery in Europe – the EnspireME system set up by Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation in Jardelund – stabilizes the power grid, ProCom supports proper operation. The smart solution from the Aachen consulting firm ensures operation in the ideal state of charge and optimizes the usage of the new 48 MW storage system. The main task of the battery is to provide primary reserve capacity for grid stabilization. To ensure that EnspireME is always ready to fulfill the obligations concerning balancing power, the ProCom solution manages the battery level and determines the electricity volumes for other applications. To boost profitability, the tool takes into account the current battery operating parameters as well as forecasts for power prices, wind, and loads.
This optimization benefits not only Eneco and Mitsubishi Corporation as the system operators; EnspireME can also store electricity from nearby wind farms when high grid utilization prevents infeed. That eliminates shutdown of these wind power systems, and their wind-generated energy reaches the market later on. EnspireME thus can support the energy transition in two ways: firstly, the battery delivers reserve capacity that would otherwise have to be provided by coal or gas fired power plants, and secondly, it can boost electricity generation from wind farms near the Danish border.
