150 tonnes on 100 wheels on the way to Korea
Even the first transportation section began very spectacularly: the shipyard transporter, produced at the SCHEUERLE plant in Pfedelbach, completed the journey to Heilbronn´s Neckarhafen entirely on its own axles. The gigantic transporter – 23 metres long and 8-meters wide – has the surface area of a semi-detached house and the 150-tonne tare weight is carried on 100 wheels.
Logistical preparations had already been going on for weeks in advance. All necessary measures for the detailed route planning were co-ordinated with the local police authority and also included the closing of the A6 motorway, Nuremburg to Heilbronn, which was the longest stage of the operation. The transport set off at night when traffic was at its quietest and arrived at its planned destination early in the morning: the heavy-load quayside in the Heilbronner Neckarhafen. After loading on to a barge was completed, the journey for the SCHEUERLE transporter continued along the Neckar and Rhine up to the port of Rotterdam, where the shipyard transporter was transferred to an ocean-going vessel. The last stage of the journey to Korea could then begin.
The SCHEUERLE shipyard transporter is a specially designed vehicle which will be used in a Korean dockyard for transporting large ship construction units – so-called sections. With a payload of 800 tonnes the special transporter will move enormous sections from the production area to the dock. Here, the individual units are pieced together to form the complete ship. In order to carry out this task safely and reliably, the transporter has an electronically-controlled multi-directional steering feature which provides numerous possibilities. The include standard, crab, transverse and circular steering modes by which the vehicle can turn on its own axis. Delicate driving operations are provided by the hydrostatic drive which allows completely smooth and extremely accurate load transportation. Thus, the driver can precisely manoeuvre the ship sections and with complete safety to the designated assembly position.
The power for the complete hydraulic system is generated by two synchronised 388 hp diesel engines which, in each case, drive the hydraulic pumps via a transfer gear-box. These hydraulic pumps produce pressurized oil which is then forced through the labyrinth of hoses to the hydraulic motor in the wheel sets, steering cylinders and in the lifting mechanism of the transporter. All functions such as traction drive, steering angle as well as lifting and setting down loads are carried out by means of an on-board computer and are electronically monitored with ultra-sensitive electronic equipment.
This modern transportation technology is the basis for cost-effective shipbuilding using a sectional construction method. SCHEUERLE has developed into one of the world´s leading manufacturers in this special vehicle sector over the past few years and is one of the first points of reference for companies within the shipbuilding industry when specialised transportation jobs require an economical and reliable solution.
