500 ton record weight on the English roads
SCHEUERLE InterCombi bogie units used in special configuration
The largest and heaviest one-piece cast component, with a mass of 315 tons, was recently transported on the roads in England. The heavyweight construction was moved by the English special transport and road haulage company, Collett Heavy Transport Ltd, from the production plant of the Sheffield Forgemasters Ltd. to the port of shipment, Goole, which is located on the River Ouse and around 75 km from the coast. From there, the load was taken to Antwerp on a sea-going freighter. Heavy load combination bogie units of the Pfedelbach-based special vehicle manufacturer, SCHEUERLE, were used by the haulage operators.
The 48-metre long and 6-metre wide heavy load convoy weighed a total of 500 tons. In order to ensure that the weight could be evenly distributed, Collett used heavy load bogie units from the InterCombi series manufactured by Scheuerle. The special feature of the vehicle combination was the configuration consisting of three-metre wide pendulum axle bogies which were laterally extended through the use of so-called split units. Here, "half” combination units were coupled with a third row of pendulum axles, thus allowing the width of vehicle to be increased to 5 metres. For this particular transportation assignment, 18 axle lines – each with 3 pendulum axles - were used. The heavy load combination bogie units rolled on a total of 216 wheels, which were pulled and pushed by heavy load tractors. Collett Heavy Transport Ltd. is currently the only heavy load transportation company in Western Europe that has the required special equipment to carry out the so-called 3-file operations from SCHEUERLE.
This transport was the largest total weight which the English heavy load hauliers, Collett, had ever moved on English roads. A number of detours had to be made as the load for some bridge constructions on the direct route to the port was too high.

A cast part – manufactured in one piece – had to be moved from Sheffield via the port of Goole to Antwerp. Heavy load combination bogie units from the InterCombi series from SCHEUERLE were used.
