KAMAG vehicles for hot jobs in China
They are as heavy as the loads they have been designed to carry and have the ability to comfortably handle one of the most dangerous transportation tasks around. They transport molten slag weighing 80 tonnes which has a temperature of up to 1300 degrees. They can be operated using just one small finger and, in spite of their size, are more manoeuvrable than an automobile. We are talking about slag pot carriers from KAMAG. Two of these vehicles, each with a dead weight of 76 tonnes, have now been shipped to their future place of work in the distant municipality of Tianjin in China by the Ulm-based special vehicle manufacturer, KAMAG Transporttechnik.
An explosive transportation task in the true sense of the word awaits the two slag pot carriers which will be used in a Chinese steelworks for the disposal of molten slag which reaches temperatures of up to 1300 degrees. This accumulates during the production of steel – in the so-called in the converters. Whereas the molten steel melt consists of various base materials and flux such as pig iron, steel scrap and alloying additions, slag is a waste product which swims on the surface of the molten steel. After smelting has taken place, it is poured into large slag ladles that have to be emptied as fast as possible before the slag cools down and solidifies. If this were to happen, the expensive ladle could no longer be used. In transportation assignments of this nature, the reliability and safety of the vehicles are of the utmost priority.
In spite of their enormous size – 12.3 metres long, 5.2 metres wide and up to 6.2 metres high – the two slag pot carriers are extremely manoeuvrable. Designed with articulated steering, the prime mover can be turned up to 60 degrees on both sides whilst the turning radius of only 9.3 metres is clearly under that of a car. The powerful hydro-mechanical drive is fed by a Cummins diesel engine. At the same time, this also supplies the entire hydraulic system with oil which is required for steering purposes as well as for picking up and tipping the slag ladle. In order to ensure that the vehicle is always in a rock-solid position during the tipping procedure at the dumping site, the rear end of the carrier is supported by means of two outriggers. Aprons made of solid steel chains protect the wheels during tipping.
A stable roof over the driver´s cab provides effective protection against slag spillage. This is also coated with fire-proof cement at the plant so that it becomes resistant to the effects of the extremely destructive molten slag.
The fact that the Chinese steelmakers have ordered their vehicles for this very demanding transportation job from Ulm-based KAMAG Transporttechnik is not without good reason: worldwide, KAMAG ranks among the leading manufacturers for vehicles of this kind and has around 40 years of experience. As a result, a large number of international steel producers have placed their trust on transportation technology from Ulm.
