Modular Transporter from SCHEUERLE Used
Successfully at the Construction of the World’s Largest Refinery in India
SPMTs (self-propelled modular transporters) from SCHEUERLE recently played a crucial role in erecting the world´s largest refinery "JERP” (Jamnagar Export Refinery Project) in Jamnagar, India. The Indian heavy transport company Freight Wings had expanded its fleet for these transport tasks at the end of last year by purchasing further modular transporters from SCHEUERLE.
In total, more than 40,000 tonnes of plant components had to be transported from the port to the refinery site approximately 18 kilometres away in Jamnagar, in the western state of Gujarat. These were reactors, splitters and vacuum containers, weighing between 600 and 1,600 tonnes. The individual components for the refinery were produced in Italy, Korea and Japan and brought by sea to the port close to Jamnagar.
There, the SPMTs took on the heavy and valuable loads. On the way to JERP, they had to overcome obstacles such as level crossings and tight bends. Absolute reliability was a necessity, particularly for crossing the main train lines on the western side. "No problem for our SPMTs” was the confident response from the transport manager in charge at Freight Wings. The electronic multi-directional steering meant that the components with some gigantic dimensions could be transported safely through all tight spots. Uneven ground or crossing train tracks had no effect on the loads. The large axle adjustment of +/- 350 millimetres of the pendulum axles made sure of that. The broad tread of the tyres was a particular advantage when travelling on unpaved sections of road. The PowerPackUnits (PPU), equipped with diesel engine, hydraulic pumps and electronic steering, ensured good progress even on difficult road surfaces.
Freight Wings has developed into one of the most effective heavy goods transporters in India. The company’s management recognised the advantages of self-propelled modular transporters years ago and invested in this technology. Today, Freight Wings is an important partner for the up-and-coming industry in India, whenever the task is to transport large and heavy loads. The job of transporting for the erection of the largest refinery plant in the world proved to be a confirmation for both Freight Wings and SCHEUERLE the vehicle manufacturer, as all transport tasks were performed safely and reliably.
