Precise transport operations at aircraft manufacturer´s facility
Special vehicle from SCHEUERLE supports AIRBUS assembly
A purpose-built vehicle for transporting aircraft fuselage sections – produced by the Pfedelbach-based heavy-duty vehicle manufacturer, SCHEUERLE – has been delivered to the Airbus facility in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. The support frames, which are transported by means of an elevating platform truck, have been designed to carry front and rear fuselage sections for the A300 to A340 range of aircraft.
The fuselage transporter from SCHEUERLE had to be designed to meet the special requirements of the aircraft construction industry. For example, this meant that extremely accurate positioning had to be guaranteed when driving under and picking up the support frames. That this requirement demanded the appropriate know-how and expertise could be demonstrated in the vehicle´s dimensions alone: with a length of 23.5 m and a 5-metre width, the vehicle is as large as a spacious 4-room apartment. The transporter must be positioned under the support frame to within a millimetre before any lifting process, by means of lifting cylinders integrated in the pendulum axles, can possibly begin. For this, the customer set tough specifications in that the tolerance for the positioning accuracy between vehicle and support frame could only amount to a maximum of two millimetres – and this in spite of the immense overall length.
The required driving manoeuvrability was provided by a sensitive adjustable hydrostatic drive facility which is electronically steered. In addition, accurate vehicle manoeuvring is supported by an electronic steering feature complete with a choice of several programs, freely-selectable by the driver according to the situation. With this, the transporter can be positioned with pin-point accuracy as well as being safely manoeuvred in tight and narrow conditions.
SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik GmbH has already supplied several special vehicles for different transportation tasks at AIRBUS. Its sister company, NICOLAS, which like SCHEUERLE is part of the TII Group which belongs to the Heilbronn-based entrepreneur Otto Rettenmaier, has also delivered a range of vehicles to AIRBUS, predominantly for the company´s French plant in Toulouse. The TII Group is thus an important supplier for in-plant special vehicles for the European aircraft manufacturer.
