SCHEUERLE presents transporter combination for submarines
up to 3,500 tons at trade fair
The Pfedelbach-based heavy load and special vehicle manufacturer, SCHEUERLE, recently presented a transporter combination for extremely large and heavy submarines at a trade fair in Sidney, Australia. Representatives from the Australian shipbuilding industry were very impressed by the modern transportation technology from the renowned southern German specialist vehicle producer.
The transport of submarines on land is considered to be a particularly difficult process. As powerful and stable as these vessels actually are in their watery element, they are very sensitive if they have to be lifted and transported ashore. On the one hand, transportation on land is necessary due to modern manufacturing technologies in shipbuilding and, on the other, for maintenance and repair work. Components are manufactured at several locations throughout the shipyard that are then combined to form the complete vessel, after which it is taken and placed in the water. This usually takes place using an enormous ship lifting installation which functions similar to that of an elevator.
Moving such vessels ashore is quite a challenge for transport vehicles. The proven SPMT (Self Propelled Modular Transporters) series from Scheuerle provides the technically perfect solution for this type of assignment. Not only can the hydrostatically-driven heavy load platform vehicles be coupled to one another depending on the required load but can also be arranged in several rows next to each other if necessary. In order that all vehicles function synchronously, on-board computers ensure both the correct driving speed and steering angle. In the process, special steering programs make it possible that the complete transport can on its own axle like a carousel. This guarantees a very high level of manoeuvrability in spite of the huge dimensions involved.
The concept presented in Australia featured a vehicle combination with a total of 129 axle lines which are arranged in three rows of vehicles and driven by means of 3 Power Packs. In this configuration, the transporter unit is capable of transporting a submarine weighing up to 3,500 tons.
