SCHEUERLE supplies two 1,000 t transporters to Korean shipyard
SCHEUERLE Fahrzeugfabrik recently supplied two self propelled elevating ltransporters – each with a payload of 1,000 tons – to the Korean dockyard, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. (DSME). Each of the two vehicles has a tare weight of around 175 t and has been designed for a total weight of 1,215 tons. By means of these special transporters, individual ship sections will be transported from the production facilities to the final assembly area.
With loading area dimensions of 21 x 10 metres, each of the two transporters is so large that it can comfortably provide parking space for 28 medium-class cars. Furthermore, with a payload of 1,040 tons, each vehicle could even carry close to 900 cars of this category. These facts and figures emphasize just how large the two vehicles are which were shipped from their production site in Pfedelbach in Germany to the Korean dockyard.
Each transporter is powered by two 516 hp Deutz diesel engines. In order to be able to carry out precise and sensitive driving manoeuvres for accurate positioning of the, as a rule, enormous ship sections, the transporters are equipped with hydrostatic drive. Electronic steering, complete with various steering programs, makes the vehicle extremely manoeuvrable despite its enormous size. The vehicle can, for example, turn on its own axis using the so-called carousel steering program.
The transporter platform is supported on 32 pendulum axles with a total of 128 wheels. Through hydraulic cylinders integrated in the pendulum axles, the transporter can raise the platform hydraulically and thus lift the ship section up off its supports on which it was built. After this, transportation begins to the assembly site in the dry dock where all sections are joined to form a complete ship.
SCHEUERLE is one of the world´s leading manufacturers in the area of shipyard vehicles and has supplied a range of special vehicles to the Korean, Chinese and Japanese markets over many years. The DSME shipyard order is yet another in a long line placed by companies in the Asian shipbuilding industry with the Pfedelbach-based vehicle producer.
